Day of the Dead Community Event 2018

In preparation for Dia de los Muertos, let's review:

Offrenda – home altars, to honor loved ones who have died. Decorations may include incense, candles, gifts, bright flowers and decorations, pictures of saints, and photographs and offerings of the decease’s favorite food and drink.

Calacas - skeletons made of paper mâché, clay, wood or paper depicting dead loved ones doing every day tasks such as riding a bike or getting married.

Flor del Muerto – Flower of the Dead. The traditional flower of Day of the Dead is the Marigold , which is spread on paths and used to decorate altars and the cemetery. The pleasant aromas of foods, copal incense, and marigolds help attract and guide the souls home.

Calavera - Literally means “skull” in Spanish, but it is also used to refer to a lot of things relating to the dead: songs, poems, drawings, candy skulls, and more.

About the celebration of death

These days The Day of the Dead holiday blends the cultures of the Aztec and Spanish Conquistadors.

When the Spaniards arrived in Mexico, they encountered two-month celebrations honoring death, For thousands of years, the goddess Mictlantecuhtli (Lady of the Dead) presided over Aztec harvest rituals using fires and incense, images of their dead, and offerings of ceramics, personal goods, flowers and foods, drink, and flowers.

The church attempted to transform the joyous celebration to a suitably tragic image of death and a serious day of prayer reflecting on the saints and martyrs. The people of Mexico did not fully adopt the early priests' ideas, and by keeping their familiar ceremonies, All Saint's Day and All Soul's Day evolved into the celebrations we know today.

2018 Honoring our Mother Earth "lift her up"

in 2016 it was
Honoring Humanity Searching for a Better Life

Every year we choose to dedicate the event in honor of people, in the past we have honored children, grandparents, and the people that died in the September 11th tragedy just to mention a few. This year we want to honor all the migrants, immigrants, and refugees in the world. We think about people that must escape their places of origin because of political upheaval, lack of opportunities, and even persecution. Many die in the search of a better life for themselves and their family. We have seen this in the news and it is shocking, and it's also sad to think of tragedies we never hear of. To all of them we dedicate this year's Day of the Dead community event! This year thinking of all of them we came up with the title of the 2016 Day of the dead community event "Honoring Humanity Searching for a Better Life"
